Yes. From a licensed dealer: a background check is required and conducted by the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) before any firearm transfer ﹘ the dealer must verify your photo ID and complete the BCI/NICS check before handing you the gun.
    •    If you’re licensed to carry (Utah Concealed Firearm Permit holder) and show a valid permit (confirmed via BCI), you are exempt from the background check and fee.

Yes, However you must not be a prohibited person under federal or state law—for example, convicted felons, individuals adjudicated mentally ill, users of controlled substances, dishonorably discharged veterans, or those under certain protective orders. If you meet those conditions, yes.

No permit is required to purchase or own a rifle, shotgun, or handgun in Utah. Either from a private seller or a dealer.

Prohibited categories include:
    •    Felony convictions (violent felonies or others)
    •    Juvenile adjudications within statutory lookback windows
    •    Domestic violence misdemeanors or restraining orders
    •    Illegal immigration status
    •    Use of illegal drugs or mental incompetence as defined under federal law.

•    Medical marijuana cardholders are considered users of controlled substances and are prohibited  .
    •   Misdemeanor convictions: Some misdemeanors (e.g., domestic violence) can disqualify you; others may not—depends on classification   .
    •    Old felony convictions: Felony convictions generally permanently prohibit firearm possession, unless a pardon or restoration of rights occurs.

•    No, Utah does not require firearm registration for any type of firearm.

 Yes, you may gift a firearm to a Utah resident without going through an FFL, as long as the recipient is eligible and of legal age. If you prefer, you can still involve an FFL (especially for background checks or record‑keeping)  .

  Not in private-party transfers between Utah residents over the legal age.
    Yes if you want a background check done or are transferring across state lines: then the firearm must go through FFLs in seller’s and buyer’s states, and buyer completes ATF Form 4473 and BCI check as part of the transfer.

      Yes, private sales are legal in Utah between residents without mandatory background checks or permits. But federal law still prohibits knowingly selling to a prohibited person.
